Fuel price hike premature – CSPR

Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) has described the hike in fuel prices as premature.

The ERB on Friday last week adjusted upwards the pump price of petrol and diesel to K13.70 per litre from K9.87 and K11.40 from K8.59 respectively and kerosene from K6.12 to K8.03.

But CSPR Executive Director Patrick Nshindano says government should have waited until it had conducted a comprehensive review of the energy sector.

He has observed that the 38 percent abrupt increase in fuel prices is too huge for a common Zambian citizen to bear.

He states that while it was expected that the government will remove subsidies, it was anticipated that this will be done gradually.

Mr. Nshindano notes that fuel has a bearing on poverty reduction because when its price goes up, prices of goods and services also go up.
