Embracing the blogger’s new best friend – Acer Chromebook 13

If you’re like me then you’ve probably navigated the wonderful world of Windows-powered PCs for the past few years. The Windows OS has enjoyed a monopoly over other operating systems  but has recently lost its popularity to the Chromebook.

Chromebooks are lower powered laptops with an extended battery life and an OS that allows you to do whatever a browser can do. Created with Chrome users in mind, they take advantage of the Chrome web store to offer a wide range of business, productivity and game apps and are primarily internet dependent machines.

I recently got an Acer Chromebook 13 when my lifelong Windows laptop gave up on me. After ordering it online (it looked really pretty), my life changed and it has since become my best friend. This is what I got for the $249 (about ZMK 2,300)  I paid for it:

  • CPU: 2.1GHz Nvidia Tegra K1 CD570M-A1 (quad-core)
  • Graphics: Nvidia Keplar
  • RAM: 2GB DDR3 (1,333MHz)
  • Screen: 13.3-inch, 1.920 x 1.080
  • Storage: 16GB SSD
  • Ports: 2 x USB 3.0, HDMI, SD card slot, headphone/mic jack
  • Connectivity: 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Camera: 720p HD webcam
  • Weight: 3.31 pounds
  • Size: 12.9 x 9 x 0.71 inches (W x D x H)

As a blogger, I use a laptop for 5 main reasons; tweeting, taking notes, writing blog posts at coffee shops, listening to music and checking my email. I applaud Google for creating an online ecosystem that allows users to be able to sync and collaborate right from Google Drive and the advantage that Chromebooks have is that they are able to work without an internet connection. Although you can’t run traditional applications like Skype, you can work around this by using andriod apps on your Chromebook.

Despite it’s many flaws, the Chromebook is ideal for students, bloggers and light PC users due to the ease of syncing between home, work, class, dorm room or internet cafe’. The extended battery life and portability is great for campus, bus-rides, workshops or casual chills in the mall.

Depending on who you are, getting a Chromebook may be the best decision ever!
