Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) President, Nevers Mumba, has urged leaders of political parties to show strong leadership within their parties by curbing political violence perpetrated by their cadres.

Speaking to journalists at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Mumba said there was no place for violence in a democratic society.

Dr Mumba observed that since his days as a young man, he has believed and thaught that young people should never reach a point where they felt that the only way to express their differences in political opinion was using stones, machetes and guns.

He said this shortly after he paid a visit to youths from the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) who had just come out of a violent clash with fellow youths from the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) during the Youth Day celebrations which took place in Lusaka.

Dr Mumba said the new MMD stands against stone-age politics of thugery and violence which should be replaced with issue-based modern politics of the 21st Century.

“As a Christian Nation, we condemn in the strongest terms this culture of hatred and violence which is fast becoming part of Zambian politics and I wish to remind all of us here that behind that PF, or MMD or UPND regalia, is a Zambian youth”, Dr. Mumba remarked.

  1. I’m just encouraging all cadres to stay away from violence. If you want to enjoy politics be a smart cadre and you will never regret. Never loose your life for the sake of politicians.
