UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says that he has continued to lose elections because his supporters were reluctant to go out and vote for him on the polling day.
Mr Hichilema said this yesterday in Chongwe’s Katoba area where the opposition party kicked off their official August 11 general election campaign.

“We have continued to lose elections because you become reluctant on the voting day. I urge you to go out and vote. Tell your wife, husband and all your households to vote. For me there is no second run in this election, I am winning in the first round but it depends on each one of you.

‘‘If you decide to vote for the PF again you will be voting for your own suffering,” he said.
He wondered why some University of Zambia (UNZA) students had continued to shout the ruling party slogan ‘‘pa bwato’’ when they were hungry and had not yet been paid their meal allowances.

“Campaigns must start in your dormitory and all around campus but some of you surprise me. You are hungry and you have not received your meal allowance yet there you are shouting ‘pa bwato, pa bwato’. Is PF your mother’s party?,” he asked.
Mr Hichilema said that the UPND was the only party that could solve the socio-economic challenges of the country and urged his supporters to go flat out and campaign for him until he goes to State House.

And UPND vice president for administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba said the authorities wanted to arrest Mr Hichilema just because he cautioned the ECZ to ensure a fair play in how they would conduct the elections.
“They now want to arrest Hichilema just because he cautioned the ECZ to conduct a fair playing field; now what’s wrong with that?,” Mr Mwamba said.
He said Mr Hichilema had been denied permission to be flying around with his choppers hence they had to use vehicles when travelling to the event.

And former Chongwe parliamentarian Sylvia Masebo said that the venue for the event was changed at the last minute because First Lady Esther Lungu had a function in Chongwe town centre and they were told to find a different venue to conduct their rally. “We were told at the last minute that the First Lady had also a function at Chongwe town but we could not cancel our event because we had already sent out a message,” she said.
Mrs Masebo promised to deliver Chongwe to Mr Hichilema and appealed to him to take development to the area if elected. And former vice president Guy Scott dedicated a special song in Tonga ‘tukamiyeye’ to the late founding father of the UPND Anderson Mazoka.
Others who attended the rally were Miles Sampa and other senior members of the party.
